States, districts, and schools continue to emphasize the importance of aligning IEPs with state standards in the general education curriculum. Such alignment attempts to ensure that students with disabilities are expected to achieve the same goals as their regular education peers and have the supports and accommodations they need to engage in content-centered learning.

Access Center's Aligning IEPs with State Standards and Accountability Systems, 2004
This information brief, published by the Access Center,  summarizes current research on factors related to aligning IEPs with state standards. Key themes suggest the importance of pre- and in-service training and of flexible and useful special education policies.

This PowerPoint presentation was developed for statewide training on standards-based IEPs (January to March 2006). It includes slides on standards, the Alabama Courses of Study, curriculum guides, and steps in writing standards-based IEPs.

California Training on Writing IEPs Based on State Standards, 2005
This website provides information regarding training on writing IEPs based on state standards. A link is provided for access to the self-paced web training module. The training  assists learners in understanding IDEA and components of a performance objective. Also provided is information on how to write IEP goals connected to standards, are student focused and measurable.

NASDSE Project Forum Standards-based IEPs: Implementation in Selected States
This document, developed by Project FORUM of the National Association of State Directors of Special Education (NASDSE) in March 2006, provides a nationwide snapshot of state activities on standards-based IEPs, involving about 18 states.
